The Concept of
Co-processing Waste Materials in Cement Production
The GTZ-Holcim Public Private Partnership, coordinated by the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland
Dear user,
On this homepage you will find various digital documentations related to the topic "Co-Processing Waste Materials in Cement Production". The homepage is a joint result of a strategic alliance in the context of a public-private partnership of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH (German Technical Cooperation) and Holcim, one of the world´s leading cement suppliers.
Waste is generated throughout the world, in industrialized countries as well as increasingly in developing countries and countries in transition. Waste management and waste disposal options are comparatively advanced in industrialized countries, whereas the lack of disposal options and safe waste management are often a challenge for waste management in developing countries. The cement industry offers an alternative form of waste treatment, known as co-processing, where alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR) generated from waste enter the cement production process. If managed properly, this method can constitute an environmentally and economically attractive and safe solution for certain waste materials. Co-processing is being more and more recognized and accepted as a component within an integrated waste management concept.
The GTZ-Holcim partnership was formed to introduce, promote and support this approach in selected developing countries and to develop internationally acceptable guidelines for co-processing of waste materials in cement production.
Our two core documents are presently the full version of the "Guidelines on Co-Processing Waste Material in Cement Production", and a summary report of these Guidelines. The documents were developed by a group of experts from Holcim and GTZ. Comments from various national and international organizations and from professional experts of the private sector were also considered when compiling the document. Before finalizing the Guidelines they were also presented and discussed during various stakeholder dialogues (e.g. Morocco, Inodnesia, India, Mexico, Chile), and again their feed-back was integrated into the final version of the Guidelines.
We hope that all the information provided on this Homepage presents a valuable contribution to sound waste management and will be widely used. Please do not hesitate to send us your comments.
Yours sincerely
